Who is using Ubuntu?

Check out who and why is using Ubuntu Linux. Read the stories below.

Brook Adams, Musician

We have a place in my town that recycles computers. I found a beat up little black box with Ubuntu installed on it. You actuelly need to stick a pencil through a hole in the front to reach the switch. I brought this home and had it running within an hour. My new laptop came with Ubuntu installed and I've never looked back. I run a LAMP setup for web development, Open Office for productivity, Gimp and Inkscape for graphics, Lilypond and Audacity for music. I'm fully open source and very happy here.

I was getting sick of Microsoft Windows and it's near total penetration in the computer market.

I bought a new low-specification laptop and it came with Windows Vista preinstalled... it ran horribly because it used so many of the computer's resources, and was just generally unpleasant to use. I installed an old copy of Windows XP just so the computer could work!

After years of being frustrated by the sloppiness of software and the sheer magnitude of the files, and the number of unnecessary software, including a generally unpleasant computing experience, I decided to take the dive into Linux... it took me ages to find the right one for me, as really I didn't know much about Linux. I came across Ubuntu, and my technically minded brother said it was supposed to be easy to use.

I installed it, and have not looked back... true I do miss playing some more modern games that don't run on Wine, but really, the computer does everything I could want it to! I mean, who really wants to do anything apart from word processing, browsing the web, instant messaging, and watching films?

I love my Ubuntu, and the vast support net available on Ubuntu forums. Hopefully Ubuntu will soon become fully out of the box, and give Microsoft its much needed run for its money... with Ubuntu being free!

The repositories also are my gateway to my productivity and entertainment... some of my favourite educational software is on there... I love my Freemind and Openoffice Formula! :D

I was using windows for almost 6-7 years, but inspite of that I had feeling that everything in windows is fixed, you can change anything like the login screen, boot screen anything....I started searching the internet for alternatives to microsoft, that's when I found about linux.

I learnt that linux is fast, stable and most important of all customizable by anyone. You dont have to be a geek to change the way you want it to look like. And though the transition from windows to ubuntu wasn't easy I feel that now I'm enjoying linux like never before. Ubuntu detected my wireless, hardware perfectly. With new versions released every 6 months, the support is amazing.

Also if you face any problem, forums like www.ubuntuforums.org help you a lot to fix your problem. You get an answer to your queries in minutes after you post it on the forum.

Linux is the future...!!!!

Chris, Resident domestic engineer, household IT manager, not so gourmet cook.

I was informed that Ubuntu Linux was the answer to all my Windows worries...and the friend was right. I have a very well equipped desktop that was BSODing me every day for weeks, exactly 2 weeks out of extended warranty. I first had a dual boot of the failing XP OS and Ubuntu. I quickly decided to just wipe out the whole thing and go UL all the way. I backed everything up and went for it. I'll never go back. It's like having a new computer. And it FLIES!

My laptop has XP still because I have few crafty things that are stuck in the tunnel of Windows and won't work under WINE. But I dual boot with UL and use it almost exclusively.

I resurrected an 'obsolete' laptop with a fried HD with a linux distro called 'puppy' that can run on a USB drive for my 8 year old. She doesn't know the difference between it and Windows. All she knows is that old laptop in the closet is now hers to send and receive email, play her internet games, etc.

I use Ubuntu because its open source, available and adaptable to all users, and it challenged me to think outside the box, errrr, window without having to invest a lot of $$$ for Mac.

My first approach to the Ubuntu Operative system was with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. Just for the fun, I ordered the CDs to be shipped to my home here in Colombia , South America. After a few days I forgot about the whole deal. Much big was my surprise when in matter of like four weeks, the Cds show up at my door lol, I couldnt believe it, the international shipping really works amazingly. I found Ubuntu easy to install and windows friendly, It didnt messed up anything that has to do with windows and anything regarding the files in the hard disks , that was my initial worry. Since then Ive keep Ubuntu and W¡ndows head to head but use much more Ubuntu on a daily basis. I feel Ubuntu still cannot totally replace windows for key things, but is getting there, with gigantic steps. I recommend to give it a try and dont pass this experience!

Jerome Bailey, PHP Application Developer

I had just bought a laptop and was experimenting with vista. I had always heard about linux operating systems and even tried the live cd for knoppix but wasnt sure of what to do with it. I wanted to create a partition on the vista hard drive and wasnt able to even with the partition software that came on vista. I heard about gparted, heard it was a linux program, tried it, and it worked! I then installed ubuntu, loved the colors and the speed. I accidentally deleted the vista partition and had problems putting it back on. I then decided to put the ubuntu on full, no windows, and I have not looked back since.

Microsoft gives you windows, linux give you the entire world!!!!!!!!
Believe that.

Chris Tomalty, Student

I'm a perfectionist. I got a laptop with Windows XP which, thought great at first, started to run slowly. When the Windows Based Installer was released, I tried Ubuntu and was amazed how much Windows was holding me back. I eventually graduated to a full dual boot with Ubuntu after XP started bluescreening, and then to a single boot Ubuntu. I have been amazed by the stability and flexibility Linux has given me.

I have since graduated to a brand new, much more powerful laptop and the first thing I did was resize the Vista partition to as small as it would allow me and create a fresh Ubuntu installation. Ubuntu has always worked for me and is now my primary OS, with Vista standing by for that (yet to happen) time when I cannot run a program in Crossover Office or find a Linux alternative. Ubuntu has unleashed my creativity and helped me learn about the essence of computers, as well as truly come to appreciate what I've been missing.

Well, I first caught a glimpse of ubuntu on-line while it was still at it starting stages but never thought much of it until I saw its login screen on one computer at he university computer room that had Intrepid Ibex installed on it.I instantly fell in love with the whole appearance and guess what,I realized that I hadn't seen the last of it when I logged in to be greeted with a simple gnome desktop effects 'fused' with compiz.you might call it love at first sight,I don't mind that, one thing I know is that this one last for ever.I love Ubuntu and everything about it.I had windows vista home premium as the not only as sole OS on my system but also as the best OS I had ever run,Thanks to ubuntu,I'm now having a dual boot of it and ubuntu 8.10 plus my passion for windows is rapidly fading away. The closest and the dearest can bear witness,I rarely switch to windows except to confirm that its system files are still upbeat.Ubuntu, and Im sure all Linux based OS provide a nice environment for programming.I wish everyone would realize the beauty in openSource OS.With freedom come elegance.Linux for human beings.Big ups to Linus Torvald

Carlos Salazar, Entrepreneur, Retail Part Time

I have always worked with computers even with my business. Who could have imagined that one would need computers for building guitars and violins but they are very handy. I draw my designs on paper and then perfect them using the GIMP and free CAT programs which are easily available and quick to install. Thanks to the ubuntu community. I have co installed Ubuntu in my personal computer along with windows, but I use this great Linux 90% of the time. I don't have to worry about putting it on other computers and be in trouble with the law. I am always recommending this great OS with friends, family, and partners in this interesting music community.

I tried to dual boot last year using ubuntu 7.1 with windows xp and screwed up the system because i didn't know how to do so, so I decided to wipe out my windows and just give linux a try. At first sight I wasn't comfortable with using linux because some of the hardwares are working less than optimal. I was crying for my xp back but then I had decided to stick to it and see what comes may, because I lost the installation cd.

As it turns out, linux wasn't that difficult to use after all. A simple apt-get command allows me to download the software and install it for me automatically without having me to go online, download the package and going through a series of installation steps as I would have done had I been using windows. Then there are a lot of support online and if I meet any problems with my system, either I wait for the updates to release the latest patches which always comes timely, or I fix the bugs myself by looking through the forums and search for the answers. In fact I think this should be the way computing experience should be, to take control over our machines and take responsibility for it, rather than to expect certain companies to take the blame for whatever security loopholes that might be discovered.

Though linux works on the hardware less than optimal, the fact that it is free, it works, and it is more secure than windows should give linux its full credit for being the best OS that can be found. Right now I have been running linux on my laptop for a year without a glitch and I am seeing how long this laptop can last till it expires. Keep up the good work linux!

Jordan Maris, Kid

I Started using Ubuntu When My Parents Pc Died And I Installed Ubuntu For Them
Ever Since I Have Been Reluctant To Use Windows.
I Am So Much Happier
My Pc Runs Faster ,Better And Does More

Alberto Guevara, Engineering Student

I've been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and I must say that I have never needed to roll back to Windows to do University papers, presentations and/or videos and web sites. Ubuntu has made my life a lot easier and more efficient, and I love the idea of sharing with people around the world to make this the best operating system ever.

Richard, Web Developer (Junior/Mid)

I come from a windows background, and have been developing PHP applications in a windows environment (for Linux servers). I was always hesitant about trying out a Linux desktop, mainly because of the stereotypes of Linux, in that it was an OS for the power user, the uber geek, and I feared I would be wasting my time. Then I was introduced to Ubuntu, and all my previous perceptions about Linux were changed entirely. I fell in love! My development skills improved greatly, I started to ENJOY developing, and Ubuntu has made me PROUD of the work I produce. Also, setting up a server environment for my development is now a breeze :) I love the community support, I love the package manager, I love the command line tools, I love that I'm a Linux user, and I love Ubuntu for making all this happen for me.

I got fed up with Microsoft with all it's problems. To top it all Microsoft kept telling me that my perfectly legal XP and later with a new computer, my vista (both had come pre-installed with PCs when I bought the PCs) are not legal. So I dumped Microsoft, and tried all different flavors of Linux, finally settling on Ubuntu. My PC has Ubuntu 8.10 and my laptop has gOS a derivative of Ubuntu with Google gadgets pre-installed. I have even managed to install all the server software and networked the PC with the laptop. I also have virtual box installed.

Micko, I.T. Administrator

I started working in an office where, like most other offices out there, was all Windows based. I had used Linux in college and like Chris above, had a little Linux experience. I decided to take an old redundant server out of storage and load Ubuntu server onto it. Since I have installed it the other I.T. admins (that had no Linux experience) have seen the benefits of it. Unlike that Windows Server the Ubuntu server has never needed a reboot (that's an uptime of over 2 years folks!) and I use it as a file server, a web server and also store all the company images on it. Installing and using Ubuntu was so easy and contains so many features that I dumped my desktop distro of Vista and installed Ubuntu onto it too. I can honestly say that it is without doubt the best move that I have made. Anyone that come into my office are astounded by the "Rotating desktop" feature plus I've a Win XP distro running on a Virtual machine for the custom applications in the company. Try Ubuntu, you won't be disappointed

Azwar,

My first experience on Linux was "command line driven OS" black screen and yellow text. Until one day I try to google linux without knowing that there are a lot of distributions. My first page was Ubuntu on ubuntu.com. The screenshot look nice with clean desktop and 2 panel. Then on shipit page, I order 1 cd of feisty fawn. Installing ubuntu so easy. Now I'm using Intrepid version. I choose ubuntu because it is easy to use and the friendly ubuntu community. By the way, I now can surf the internet without using any antivirus, no more loosing my doc coz of windows crash, no more slow & slugish performance on my 1gb RAM. Ubuntu is perfect for me.

Linux and open source is the wave of the future when it comes to putting power back into the people's hands. My Linux story started some time ago when someone I know mentioned Unix. Curious to see what this new thing was, I did some research and eventually uncovered the amazing story of open source software. I couldn't believe that there were people out there looking to make software free, open and available to everyone. After years of Windows hijinks, pirating, software updates, virus software, etc. I was ready for a fresh change. Not ready to jump fully into Linux, I dual booted Red Hat with Windows ME. I liked Linux as it forced me to learn my computer from the inside out, but Red Hat just didn't do it for me. I eventually went through all the major distros, liking them all, but falling short of using them full time because Linux doesn't always fit your hardware like a glove without some tweaking. I even went hardcore and gave Gentoo a try. Knoppix was always a good trick to play on people =)

After using Windows for about 10 years I bought a Mac and stayed on that for a long time. But I always kept my eye on the open source community because I knew Linux would eventually catch on and get better and better. My biggest problem was that every flavor of Linux I tried just wouldn't work with the wireless card in my laptop I had at the time and there was never any step by step tutorials that were clear enough for me. By the time Ubuntu came out I was pretty good at installing Linux and doing some command line stuff. Then I got an EEE PC. I figured since it came with Linux, the wireless card would be configured already. It was, but the Xandros interface was just blah. I gave Ubuntu EEE a shot and was extremely happy, although it tooks about two weeks of tweaking to get the wireless to work. I was hooked on my new little toy and decided I wanted a bigger challenge and glanced over at my 24 inch Intel iMac. Ubuntu 8.10 had just come out and I was ready. I partitioned my iMac and went through a near flawless install. The only problem was I didn't have any sound in Ubuntu. So I went on IRC and some nice people talked me through it. Now I have an EEE PC and an iMac dual booted with Leopard and Ubuntu.

If you want a challenge and really want to escape the M$ world, give Ubuntu a shot. It's really the easiest Linux to learn. If your having problems and tutorials don't work for you, go on the Ubuntu IRC chat room. There's always tons of people on there who can walk you through just about anything if tutorials aren't working for you.

For the average computer user who just has to get basic stuff done, Ubuntu is the way to go. So all you Linux heads start getting out there, sit your friends down and open their eyes. Technology isn't just a luxury any more. It's part of our daily lives. Big Corporations just want us to keep spending money blindly when with just a little homework, we can release ourselves from technology prison.

Uber Ubuntu, What do You do for living? Systems Admin: I.T., Web Design, and sooo much more

I have been using *nix for a few years, and while I do like Ubuntu for it's ease and stability, I do not believe that Ubuntu is the easiest distro for newbies. That title goes to PCLOS and SimplY Mepis. I feel that KDE is a better enviroment for the noob with the exception of Kubuntu (Bad implementation of K).

Chris, Im a Student But I run my own Ubuntu Server

One day I had Windows Server 2000 installed about 4 years ago, I noticed that it ran really slow on a fairly high end machine (1.8ghz AMD Athlon XP, 2gb ram 60gb hard drive). I just it was really slow. Since I had previously taken the Intro to Linux class at my local community college I had previous linux experience. I decided to give Ubuntu a try and see how the performance was comapaired to that of Windows 2000. the pgoram im in for school allowed me to download Copies of Microsoft Server software for free, I tried Windows Server 2003. I noticed right away that after installing Ubuntu, which by the way was very easy to get up and going, that it was very quick and easy to run on older hardware. I cant tell you how happy I am that I switched. Another thing I like about the Ubuntu server is that it comes with Apache MySQL and PHP all built into the installation there is almost no configuration of any files to get it working they call it the LAMP server that gets installed with the Ubuntu server automatically. I will never switch back to a Microsoft Based Server again !
