i've been off and off linux for the past few years, but it looks like they have won me over with ubuntu hardy 8.04. dont care what any one says, this is when people are going to start turning to linux (big time), microsoft are going to feel it :), anyways i have enjoyed using ubuntu. easiest of them all so far. all though some trouble getting my dvb card to work only took me 15 mins on google to figure it out. (im trying to convert my mates as hmmmm this msg is being typed.

Keaton James P., Student Tech Support

I first discovered Linux when I started doing tech support work at my school about 2 and a half years ago. Back then, we used Fedora Core 4 thin client servers and despite how spartan the setup was, I was so taken by the open source philosophy that I petitioned a friend of mine, a Linux guru, as to what distribution I should use. Sure enough, he suggested Ubuntu.

Now, I'm running the latest version of Kubuntu on my home computer, and even play Steam games through wine! I'm learning to write C, truly mastering the Linux system, and my school even uses Ubuntu Server on it's webserver and will shortly be switching to Edubuntu for our thin clients!

Ubuntu, despite what the critics say, is my favorite distribution because it's so quick and flexible. I can sit down at a workstation with an ubuntu CD and have a working OS in 30 minutes, a customized setup in an hour.

Thanks, to everyone on the Ubuntu team!

Last year (2007) I heard about Ubuntu the first time. I was amazed of the good-looking Desktop and I heard I can have it for 0€ (I live in Austria/Europe)! Two days later I had installed Ubuntu on my PC and I knew that I couldn't use another OS, but Linux.

Now I'm writing on Win****, because I have a Medion-PC and the Hardware (WLAN) is not supported... But deep in my heart Linux is my choice!

And I don't think Ubuntu is the reason, why we are use Linux. No! It is, because of the community! We are one big (of course very big) family!

Two weeks ago I had a presentation about Linux at school. Not even my teacher, who had to study EDV to teach it, knew about Ubuntu and Linux! My classmates were amazed, when I showed their Ubuntu. Now all classmates are Ubuntu-users.

I hope drivers will become more in future, that EVERYBODY can use Ubuntu.
For myself I'm going to buy myself a computer with hardware, which is supported. Probably an apple - I don't know. BUT: I will always use Ubuntu, the fastest, best and most secure OS on the planet!

(I hope my englisch was not too bad...)

I came to Linux, and ultimately to Ubuntu after getting furiously fed-up with Windows OS and Windows applications always wanting to "call home to mama," reporting on my systems configuration and what I might be doing with it at the time. Further, as Microsoft has now instituted forced updates, whether or not I want them (even with Update Manager turned off!), I've become quite tired of the corporate intrusion. Stability issues, security issues, and now deliberate intrusion? I don't think so...

I first loaded Ubuntu 6.04 on my laptop via disk in late 2006, and haven't looked back. I had some problems with wireless networking for a time, but that was easily overcome. Ubuntu recognizes and runs all my old peripherals (printer, scanner, digital camera), saving me from costly hardware upgrades, and, to quote a phrase: "It just works." My laptop is now more potent than my previous two desktops, and for a fortune less than replacing the desktops to accommodate Windows Vista.

I'm now anxiously awaiting the Ubuntu 8.04 online upgrade. Keep up the good work, guys!

Cheers;
Ed

I just convinced my dad to try Ubuntu; he was getting tired of running so many anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities on his Vista computer. While he wasn't initially impressed by the installer (we had forgotten to defrag his hard drive before repartitioning it, which caused it to appear to hang during the partitioning process), he does like the increased speed and usability of Ubuntu.

I talked him through installing his printer. It was a piece of cake - all he had to do was connect the printer and turn it on, and Ubuntu took care of the rest. No questions asked, no driver disks needed, it just works. The same goes for his other hardware - it just works.

I use Ubuntu on my home file server and only restart it every 6 months or so (not counting restarts required by upgrades). Its great, the server lives under my stairs and I can forget about it.

I tried first Ubuntu 6.06. I did that because I had a problem with Windows updates. It was so funny because I said that I would use Ubuntu only within a week and if it convince me I'll keep using it... and since then Ubuntu is my Desktop OS.
What I like so much of Ubuntu is it's simplicity and that you can customize every single thing. Of course... desktop effects also makes me love so much this Operative System.

I'm sorry because of my poor english.

Ubuntu introduced me to free software. And I have to say that I wish I had learned about free software earlier because it is GREAT! You should try Ubuntu Linux. It is a whole different world out here. You will never look back ;)

Ubuntu 4 ever!

Whit, Web Systems Administrator

I have been using unix/linux off and on for the past 8 years. Two years ago I took the plunge and installed a distro on my desktop. After installing several different flavors I finally found Ubuntu. And Ubuntu is where I have stayed. It works, it's free, and it's support!

Pues no, me rebelé.

Escribo, colaboro, traduzco, leo, comparto, me comunico, opino, aprendo y disfruto.

viva gnu linux !

H Courtenay,

I've known about GNU/Linux for a few years, but never really made the switch until I bought a new PC notebook.

After suffering with the preinstalled Vista for 8 months, I finally decided to investigate other options - I wasn't getting the full value out of my hardware, since Vista was choking on Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB RAM and nVIDIA GeForce graphics card.

I found Ubuntu, tried it out with the Live CD, and fell in love with the speed, beauty and stability.

Saludos.

My first experience with Linux was installing it on my xbox, so that I could bypass my dads proxy. I used it and it was great for my xbox. About 6 months later I bought my self a new PC with Windows Xp, after some usage it was full of virii and was just plain unusable. I remembered how i liked my experience with Linux. So i decided to give Ubuntu a shot as my operating system. 2 Years later i haven't looked back once : )

Nick, Broke student

I first tried Ubuntu 5.10, but wasn't convinced at all: I was unable to get Wifi working with my USB stick, slowdowns everywhere. I kept XP on a dual-boot.
6.06 was great and worked very well, as 6.10. 7.04 was great and 7.10 really the best release in my opinion.
I dumped XP since 6.06, and never looked back. Except when I bought my new laptop, with Vista Basic (don't kill me please). I found this OS to be quite good, and 7.10 wouldn't recognise my sound card or my Broadcom wifi PCI card. So I kept Vista (and 7.10) on a dual boot.
I finally figured out how to get everything working, and dumped Vista too.

Now, I'm running Hardy Heron (8.04) and I really think it's the best OS I've ever used. Simple, fast and beautiful with the Human Murrine theme, I will probably never be able to use Windows on my notebook. I installed it on my girlfriend's laptop (which is not my girlfriend anymore, sadly :-( , but not because of Ubuntu, because I'm a f***ing cheater) and on my parents computer too. They all enjoy it so much that they spit on Windows like I never did...

Well, with the features included in the last version (Windows installer and Live CD), I guess everyone should give it a try. And for the gamers and pros, there is totally Wine which allows Win32 programs to run on Ubuntu. It runs quite well and almost every songle soft I tried, so no reason to pass, is it?

Anyway, this is a really great website, nice, well animated, you should totally market it towards Ubuntu Forums and maybe Ubuntu website. It gives a really nice overview of the OS.
PS: sorry for my awful english, I'm french...

I have started using Ubuntu when my XP computer got replaced by Vista one. The proprietary OS make me wonder what else is there newer than XP and better performing than Vista. The answer was simple - Ubuntu GNU/Linux. It feel just open. You can customize everything you wish the way you want it thus having one really unique computer. And all the functionality you need for day to day usage is there. You just have to try it :)

I remember the days when I used windows, it was such a pain to run the massive piece of crap on a 1.6Ghz system, then I learned about linux and tried many distributions until I found ubuntu: ubuntu was easy, fast but also powerful and flexible. I have been here since 2006 and I will always be an ubuntu-ite, ubuntu makes things easy without taking away the good basic things.

It's perfect for beginners, power-users and everything in between.

Richard Bravo, Student / Programmer

Well I just decided to start using Ubuntu because everybody was talking about it. But after a week I needed to go back to Windows and it wasn't possible because i was so used to Ubuntu that everything on windows seems to be really slow and boring. Since that I started using Ubuntu and I realize that I don't really need Windows anymore.

I switched in 2004 with Dapper and Ubuntu keeps getting better. Is not perfect(yet), but its quite nice.

Saludos ;)
