I have been messing around with various Linux distributions for years, always running a dual boot and engineering some spectacular crashes. I don't know how many times I've had to reformat/reinstall. I have always hated Windoze. It is like they just don't care how many crashes and how much grief you have to put up with. Anyway this isn't an anti Windoze rant.
After I recovered from my two year addiction to World of Warcraft I downloaded Gutsy Gibbon, burned it and installed it. I couldn't believe how smoothly it went. I wiped windows from my hard drive and now run Ubuntu 8.4. I love it.
Only reason I can see to run windows is if you are a serious gamer, but Wine (running windows apps in Linux) gets better all the time.

My first Linux distro was Caldera linux. Yes, really. For several years, I rode the fence between Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. Once I tried an early version of Ubuntu, I finally made up my mind. I'm still required to use Windows and Mac OS for my career, but at home we are an ALL Ubuntu family.
My eight-year-old goes wild over his Xubuntu installation, my wife is 100% comfortable with her own Ubuntu desktop, and have Ubuntu on both my personal desktop and laptop.
We couldn't be more pleased! We all spread the word about Ubuntu to everyone we can, and feel great about doing it!

Mein Update begann im Jahr 1987 mit der Geburt meines jüngsten Sohnes und ich wurde zur Mutter 2.0. Schon im zarten Alter von drei Jahren versuchte er die Untertitel seiner Bilderbücher abzuschreiben. Als Grundschüler spielte er Prinz of Persia und als Teenager veransŧaltete er die ersten LAN-Partys mit Freunden in unserem Wohnzimmer! Ich durfte die Verpflegung übernehmen und meinen eigenen Monitor zur Verfügung stellen! In dieser Zeit lernte er Linux kennen und schätzen. Er legte Wert darauf, auch seiner Mutter die Vorteile der Open Source Programme nahezubringen und so wurde auch auf meinem PC Ubuntu Feisty Fawn installiert. Ich war begeistert von der Übersichtlichkeit und Effektivität von Ubuntu, und wurde ein echter Fan dieses Betriebssystems. Ubuntu startet mit einem afrikanischen Trommelwirbel, wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, auf dem Bildschirm erscheinen die sanften Farben der Savanne und es ist schnell und elegant wie eine Gazelle.Im Moment benutze ich Hardy Heron! Auch als Durchschnittsuserin (Alter 63) komme ich hervorragend mit Open Office, Mozilla Firefox und Thunderbird zurecht und wenn es wirklich mal hakt, loggt sich mein Sohn bei mir ein und programmiert den Terminal nach meinen Wünschen um!
Inzwischen habe ich mir ein paar Ubuntu-T-Shirts bestellt, die ich trage, wenn es zum Walken oder ins Freibad geht, um damit auch den Namen Ubuntu nach außen zu tragen und bekannt zu machen!
Ich beglückwünsche die Erfinder von Ubuntu zu ihrer tollen Initiative Linux auch uns Normalsterblichen zugängig zu machen und es auch in dieser Richtung zu verbessern. Ubuntu hilft dabei, dass die Welt näher zusammenrückt und die Menschen mehr gegenseitiges Verständnis aufbringen. In den Zeiten der Globalisierung gibt es nichts wichtigeres als schnelle, umfassende und kompetente Information, Ubuntu leistet dazu einen herausragenden Beitrag!

My reason for switching to Ubuntu (and Damn Small Linux) came as I got fed up with Windows completely. It actually started when I heard that Ubuntu would send you a nice, pressed CD for free, so I sent away for one and, lo and behold, I received Ubuntu (Gutsy) and didn't have to pay one red cent.
I started messing around with it and, of course, ruined it...a few times. Unlike Windows it proved so much easier to bounce back (although I did need to reinstall at a couple points). As a music student, I need a score writing program and want other sound editing software. Ubuntu came to the rescue once again with Ubuntu Studio (which I currently run along with Wine 1.0rc1) providing me with the equivalent of thousands of dollars in audio/video production software.
The support is amazing and always helpful and I have become a semi-active member of the community and an evangelist of its Linuxy goodness. I tell all of my fellow musicians that if they want a studio computer on the cheap to use Ubuntu Studio or people who want an alternative to windows to use Kubuntu.
I cannot thank these people enough who work so hard to make this as painless a Linux distro as possible.

Durante muchos años fui usuario de la plataforma de Windows, por que razón? sencillamente porque no conocÃa otra alternativa... tenÃa la idea que Linux eran una plataforma destinada a gurus de la informática y que su configuración era muy complicada y difÃcil de utilizar.
Hace poco más de un año aproximadamente.... gracias a un nuevo compañero de la oficina conocà Ubuntu, especÃficamente la versión 7.04, desde ese momento creo que ha sido la mejor decisión que he tomado, no volvà a tener problemas de virus, spyware y todas esas porquerÃas de las que sufre Windows, los dolores de cabeza terminaron en ese sentido y comenzó un mundo sumamente interesante no sólo por el nuevo conocimiento que he ido adquiriendo si no por la maravillosa comunidad que hay detrás de él.
He recibido respuestas a todas la interrogantes que he tenido y desde la fecha no ha habido ni un solo problema técnico que no halla podido resolver gracias a esta comunidad.
Estoy sumamente satisfecho cambié mi sistema operativo ilegal y mis herramientas de diseño ilegales por herramientas de software libre siempre he creÃdo que en la sociedad en la que vivo hay igualdad de oportunidades pero no asà de condiciones, es aquà donde considero que Ubuntu pone en igualdad de condiciones a aquellos por razones económicas no tienen los recursos necesarios para acceder a las últimas tecnologÃas.
Sinceramente muchas gracias a todos los equipos de trabajo, desarrolladores y comunidad que están detrás de este maravilloso producto. Sigan adelante!!!!!!!!

I have always wanted to use Linux, but I like my (dos/WinXX) games too. With Ubuntu, leaving my games behind is not such a bad swap. Some of my games even run on Ubuntu. I still have a dual boot though, but only when I want to play a game that is for WinXX only.
Nonetheless, I've been using Ubuntu for over half a year now, and I'm still using it today for everything (even gaming, just not _those_ games).

Zaczynałem niedawno, chwilę po wydaniu Ubuntu 7.10,tyle mi jednak wystarczyło by przekonać się do tej dystrybucji . Osobiście używam jednak Kubuntu. Ubuntu jest świetnym systemem. Nie wyobrażam sobie powrotu do systemów Micro$oftu. Windows dla mnie to mała stabilność, ślimaczący się od uruchomionych w tle antywirusów system, interfejs graficzny, który jest dla mnie brzydki, a którego zmienić nie mogę. W dodatku tak naprawde nigdy nie wiadomo kiedy wirus zniszczy nam system, lub kiedy Windows sam z siebie odmówi współpracy. Z (K)Ubuntu mam bardzo stabilny system,który w przeciwieństwie do windows nie zwolni ani trochę, nawet po pół roku użytkowania. Nie musze się martwić wirusami, nie musze jak w systemie M$ meczyć sie na jednym pulpicie, i moge skonfigurować praktycznie wszystko w systemie. Polecam usilnie, i zachęcam by przetestować go chociażby w LiveCd.

Several years ago, fed up with paying premium prices for unstable and non-secure software that functioned as the mega-corporations wanted and not as I wanted, I migrated to Linux.
As I replaced each of my productivity tools with excellent free and open source software, I tried a variety of distros and settled on one that was "good enough."
When Feisty Fawn was released, I gave Kubuntu a try and installed it on my desktop within the week. With every subsequent release, I've loved this distro more and more and I know run it on all the machines on my network.

Sono venuto a contatto con Linux nel 2001, grazie all'università . Si utilizzava una Debian stabile ma che non riusciva a leggere le penne USB. A casa iniziai a provare varie distribuzioni, come Red Hat e Mandrake, ma quella che mi diede più soddisfazioni fu Suse. Poi finita l'università il mio interesse per Linux scemò, anche se su Windows utilizzavo quasi solo programmi Open Source. Poi mi parlarono di Ubuntu, e decisi di dare a Linux un'altra possibilità : ciò che prima era un esperimento diventò la mia piattaforma di lavoro quotidiana. Ubuntu permette di avere da subito un sistema operativo con tutti i programmi necessari, e rende facile installarne di nuovi. Poi rende molto facile e intuitivo il mio lavoro di Web Developer, a partire dall'installazione di Apache, MySQL. Veramente Ubuntu ha reso Linux alla portata di tutti: non era pensabile perdere le giornate per cercare di leggere una penna USB e ascoltare MP3. Ora ho una ditta individuale, la WebLogiX (www.weblogix.biz), che promuove l'utilizzo di Ubuntu e offre consulenze!

I first heard of Linux in '95. A classmate of mine showed me Red Hat on his laptop. I got a copy of it and installed it on my computer. For me the most important things on my computer are the video, sound, and internet access. I don't remember which, but one of them didn't work right with Red Hat. So I took Red Hat off. For about twelve years I would try different versions of Red Hat and different Distro's. Each time the same story. One or two of those things wouldn't work, or wouldn't work right. I'd wipe my drive and put Windows back. In 2006 I came across Ubuntu. I installed it on my Acer Laptop and everything worked. A few months later in 2007, I had sold my laptop and I bought a 2nd hand 500 MHz P III with only 256 MB of ram. I cranked up Compiz and was blown away. My mouth was literally hanging open. I couldn't believe the performance. It was like a brand new Dual Core system. I've been an Ubuntu addict ever since.

Ho iniziato ad utilizzare ubuntu solo l'anno scorso con la versione 7.04 e ne sono rimasto da subito meravigliato.. La cosa che più mi ha stupito è la sua velocità e la sua facilità di utilizzo...sisi avete capito bene. Spesso sento parlare di linux come se fosse un sistema difficilissimo da imparare...Certo non vi nascondo che i primi mesi sono difficili ma una volta capito il meccanismo tutto inizierà a filare liscio...Il primo consiglio che vi posso dare è quello di iniziare con i maggiori aiuti possibili...ad esempio se abbiamo la possibilità di installare un programma deb (installazione grafica con doppio click) non c'è bisogno di andare a compilare i sorgenti, queste cose le farete piu in la quando avrete acquisito un po di dimestichezza con il terminale...Un altro consiglio è quello di utilizzare programmi che vi permettano di configurare automaticamente i driver video ecc ecc in modo da non sbizzarrirsi troppo con i file di configurazione che protrebbero creare problemi tutti risolvibili..Ultimo consiglio: internet è grande e grande è la comunità di supporto ad ubuntu...in caso di problemi o per pura curiosita non esitate a visitare il wiki di ubuntu con tutte le guide oppure il supporto in linea su Irc. Dopo pochi mesi vi assicuro cestinerete gli os installati in precedenza e vi dedicherete completamente ad un os gratuito stabile veloce ma soprattutto un os vostro che potrete modificare a vostro piacimento...

Ho cominciato a sentire parlare di Linux nel 2000. Nel 2002 ho comprato una rivista con la distribuzione Mandrake (ora Mandriva) ed ho provato la versione Live. Mi tuffai a capofitto nello studio del Sistema Operativo. Finalmente, ed era per me una novità , si potevano accendere i riflettori per "guardare dentro" addirittura ad un Sistema Operativo. L'esperienza era entusiasmante. Ma come tutte le cose prese troppo di petto finiscono presto e presto mi stancai. Poi nel 2006 ad un Linux Day conobbi Ubuntu. Pensai in un primo momento (erroneamente) che si trattasse di una delle tante distribuzioni Linux. Non era così. Installai allora in dual boot con Win... (non oso più pronunciarlo) Ubuntu 6.06 (sebbene esistesse già la 6.10 si era a novembre 2006) e lo usai per circa sei mesi per motivi di studio. Adesso da circa una anno e mezzo uso stabilmente Ubuntu che ho via via aggiornato fino all'attuale 8.04. Nel mio lavoro scolastico è eccezionale. Per scrivere i compiti OpenOffice Writer col modulo Math lo trovo molto meglio di Word con Equation Editor. E poi c'è Geogebra un degno sostituto open di Cabrì . E soprattutto Ubuntu permette di personalizzarlo in ogni aspetto. Nella mia scuola ho fatto già un corso Linux per alunni e docenti per presentare il sistema e già qualcuno "è in dualboot". Poi Ubuntu è fantastico perché si aggiorna continuamente e migliora. Ricordo infatti che quando installai Ubuntu 6.06 non mi riconosceva la mia fotocamera digitale. Grazie all'aiuto però dei forum di Ubuntu (altro aspetto, quello della comunità , da tenere nella massima considerazione) sono riuscito a rilevare e a configurare perfettamente la mia fotocamera digitale.
Un pò di tempo dopo, avendo installato Ubuntu 7.04 nel portatile di mia moglie, pensai di fare le stesse operazioni per poter configurare la mia fotocamera digitale, ma con mia grande sorpresa appena ho inserito il cavo USB della digitale nel computer, mi ha riconosciuto e configurato tutto al volo. Un bel passo in avanti !!

Sono stato per molto tempo affascinato dal mondo LINUX ma per parecchio tempo ne ho avuto paura dato che le mie conoscenze di sistemi informatici era pressoché nulla, poi un giorno mi sono fatto coraggio ed ho installato su kubuntu 6.06 passando poi alle seguenti versioni fino ad arrivare alla versione di UBUNTU 8.04, col passare del tempo e la partecipazione alla comunità di ubuntu che mi ha aiutato a risolvere dei piccoli problemi che ho incontrato durante il mio percorso ed ho imparato delle cose nuove, ora mi ritrovo sempre più spesso a parlare del mondo che mi si è aperto alle persone che conosco

I had my first look at Linux in 1994, I think, on a computer party. I liked the idea, but I didn't give it another though until another party in 1998. That's when I started using it, but it was still very complicated stuff. It took me a week to get a window system up and running, and I everything was enjoyable pain to a technical person. Since then, I've been sort of a Linux dipsomaniac. I've tried all the distros, used them for a while, and hated them all. Well, I've actually never hated Ubuntu, but then, Ubuntu was the first distro that made me stay. I'm sure all the others have improved vastly too, because, you know; people share.
Everything about Ubuntu attracts me; the technology, the human ethical way of thinking, the communities respect of other peoples feelings and convictions, but most of all the separation between software and hardware. Applications can improve without the need to buy a new computer, which in this age is really important, not only for one self, but also to the environment. People do buy new computers though, and there is nothing wrong with that. It simply means that someone else can inherit the old one and make good use of it, for personal growth, fun, profit or whatever it is that they need a computer for; and they won't be left behind because of its age.
Ubuntu is not for everyone, but if you keep complaining about your computer, and don't at least try it, then your computer is not the real problem. Your habits as a consumer is, so stop complaining and live with your problems -- or try to sort them out. Ubuntu has solved all of my problems, computer-wise, and fixed a lot of problems I hadn't even considered before. All my hardware just works; no driver installs. All the software I need is installed by default; except some codecs, which are really easy to install. Granted, I'm not the most demanding user; I download videos and watch them, purchase and listen to music online. I use the web, mail, office stuff, accounting stuff, write some software, edit some videos... Normal stuff that people do, nothing fancy, but the feeling of having the system work for me instead of against me, is .. Well worth the money not spent.

Grazie a Windows e alla sua straordinaria capacità di incasinarsi posso percepire uno stipendio tutti i mesi. Sono felice e soddisfatto di ciò che faccio per vivere? No. Sono convinto che un mondo senza Windows (per la precisione senza software proprietario) sarebbe un mondo migliore. Sarei costretto a ripensare la mia professione, ma ne varrebbe sicuramente la pena.
A casa mia lavoro con Ubuntu da un paio d'anni. Mi sono imposto da un giorno all'altro di passare all'open source e tutt'ora sono felice della scelta fatta. Non potrei più tornare indietro, non sarei più in grado di lavorare con Windows, con le sue limitazioni e storture architetturali.

Ho scoperto Ubuntu nell'estate del 2006.
E' stata la prima distribuzione GNU/Linux che sono riuscito ad installare senza problemi. In precedenza avevo tentato di installare altre distribuzioni, ma sempre con conseguenti guai al pc, e perdita di dati preesistenti.
Ho iniziato con Dapper, 6.06, ed ho seguito tutte le versioni, fino all'attuale Hardy Heron, che ormai ho installato con molta soddisfazione sia a casa che in ambulatorio.
Per il mio lavoro utilizzo un gestionale che gira egregiamente sotto dosemu.
Non sento la mancanza di windows da quando sono passato a Ubuntu, e l'ho conservato soltanto in un pc di casa, per "ricordo", come si conservano gli oggetti di un museo.
Ringrazio la comunita' italiana di Ubuntu, che mi ha aiutato a risolvere i problemi inevitabili che un novizio di GNU/Linux incontra all'inizio del cammino nei sentieri di questo bellissimo sistema operativo caratterizzato da intelligenza, semplicita', efficacia e sicurezza, nonche' una bella quota di "divertimento", visto quanto e' divertente utilizzarlo e personalizzarlo.

So, i'm playing around with my laptop, when suddenly XP dies on me. It doesn't even let me boot into the OS. I'm forced to conclude that the only way I'm getting into XP again on the laptop is with a reinstall. So, I look on the internet for "backups" of XP (Don't look at me like that, i do own a disk... somewhere...), and then a thought occured to me: Sure, i COULD go back to XP, but why not try a new OS? I had heard about this "linux" thing, but never really cared to try it out, but now I had a legitimate reason to! So, I hit the forums, and eventually settle on Ubuntu (well, after Sabayon, but Sabayon felt way too slow.) I'm no linux fanboy, in fact, I still use XP on my desktop, as I own a lot of games; however, I'm dualbooting sometimes into 'Buntu, playing around with Wine. One day, when Wine gets to the point where it's able to emulate Windows near perfectly, I may even make the switch permenantly.
Ubuntu isn't perfect, in fact I've been a victim of a bug that until recently was booting me back to login every few hours. But, with the 8.04 update, that's patched up. The support for Ubuntu is great, because everyone is able to help. Microsoft has their techs, Apple has the Genius Bar, Ubuntu has the collective minds of its users. Kinda like Wikipedia, minus most of the vandals. Ubuntu isn't perfect, but it's getting closer, and closer, each and every day. Plus, Compiz alone could convince a guy to make the switch. What can I say? Cake tastes better with icing!
Hope this story convinces you to make the switch, or at least makes you consider that the preinstalled operating system that comes on your computer might not be the best one you can have. After all, the best things in life are free.

Ti insegno Office se il tuo babbo ha i soldini per comprarti Office ma dì al tuo babbo che l'anno prossimo c'è l'altro Office, quello con le patch quasi nuove che comunque con un qualche giga di hard disk pezzano la pezza precedente."
Scandisk, defrag e la rete che non vede la rete e io sono Win bla bla e a te non ti vedo pinguino arrogante che comunque vede me.
Ragazzi io non so tante cose, quelle che so ve le insegno volentieri, ma dite al vostro babbo che ne ho le balle piene di win bla bla, dite al vostro babbo di scriverlo al signor ministro che non so tanto nemmeno di Linux, di Ubuntu, ma quello che non so l'imparo. GRATIS. Perchè gratis è ciò che gente di buona volontà mi mette a disposizione per imparare, per sapere, per vivere COSCIENTE, per crescere generazioni COSCIENTI. P.S.: Dite al vostro babbo che Ubuntu è gratis perchè con i soldini si compra il pane non la conoscenza.

Come credo tutti, anch'io vengo dal mondo Windows e fino a tre anni fa pensavo fosse l'unico mondo possibile. Poi ho provato una distibuzione Mandriva allegata ad una rivista e nonostante le difficoltà iniziali (tipiche per chi è abituato al "tutto pronto"), ho continuato a tenerla in dual-boot con Windows. Il "punto di non ritorno" è stato segnato da Ubuntu che, preso il "coraggio" a due mani, mi ha fatto cancellare Windows e tenermi il pinguino come unico sistema operativo su tutti i computer che uso (un desk e due notebook). A dire il vero, il "salto" l'avrei potuto fare molto tempo prima se non fosse stato per la mia passione per il volo. Infatti, mi interesso di simulatori di volo fin da quando "giravano" sul glorioso Commodore 64 (all'epoca Flight Simulator era distribuito da SubLogic, qualcuno se lo ricorda?) e, ovviamente, quando Microsoft ha iniziato a sviluppare i vari FS, fui "costretto ad arruolarmi" nell'esercito di Richmond. Tuttavia, nonostante la disparità di mezzi e di risorse, oggi esistono valide alternative "volosimulatorie" anche per Linux, sia pay (X-Plane) che open (FlightGear). Perché il volo in fondo è come Linux. E' libertà .

Ubuntu es lo mejor en software LIBRE del mundo (considero yo)
- Proviene de el mas avanzado sistema linux (Debian)
- Mantiene su firmeza frente a otros S.O similares gracias a su filosofia
- Avanza a paso seguro con su continuo sistema de desarrollo colaborativo.
POr lo que creo que, con cada vez mas perfeccion, se adapta a los usuarios (y no al reves) incorporandose a la informatica diaria del mundo......
... Si eres un Ser Humano de esto fue hecho para ti.
