Was more than 12 years on Windows. Then had a few reliability issues (hardware defects without any useful error message or hint, unreadable CD-Roms although could be read fine in other machine etc).
First converted at home then in 2009 also in the office and now I am fully on Ubuntu (currently 10.04.1 using NetBeans for Java development). Project documentation written since years only with Open Office (after several big annoyances experienced editing a doc or xls in different versions of MS Office).

What I used before: Ibm 5100,Apple DOS & proDOS, MSDOS,Win 3.1,Suse 6.3,OS/2,Windows 2000/Xp,Libranet. As I was not happy with Windows (Virus, BSODs, low configurabilyty) I tried Debian, because that was what NASA used (if you can go to Mars, Jupiter etc you can also select a good OS, but it was very hard to set up. Then I found that weird name Ubuntu which they said was easy to use derivative of Debian backed by a wise business/TI guy so I tried first version, have been using it since first version.

My first encounter with linux was during my education. Basicly it was handing out Redhat 8 discs and pointing us to a website. Thats it.
It did however flip a switch in me though all i was taught was to set up some basic servers. All monkey see, monkey do.
Later I started messing around with a security distro. Batch scripting was fun!..
Only reason i kept using windows was cause i like gaming.
I first started using Ubuntu 9.10 KDE but decided I might as well go gnome since most people i knew who was using ubuntu was using this.
Ive really grown to love linux as a whole and ubuntu IS alot like windows where windows has its forces. It looks quite familiar for windows users. But I have no fear of viruses and such.
After setting up WoW running really well in my ubuntu I love it more for every day that goes.
I had to size down a few pictures for a resume and it was just so smooth and easy just typing gimp into my synaptics and letting it do all the work of downloading and installing it.
Its like having every program you could ever want at the tip of your finger. No messing around to find the right download site. Biggest problem is simply finding the name of the program you want.
Its at a point where I actually belive its easier to find help with just about any issue for linux than it would be finding help with a Windows issue.
Its free. Its alot more safe.
Often now when i support somthing in Windows I catch myself thinking that this task would be SO easy to do in linux..
Personally i belive that Just like adult movies made the VHS system popular despite it being far from the best format there was, Windows is like that. If general games would be as easy to run in Wine as they do in Windows, Linux would become ALOT more popular amongst the general population.

I have been playing with Ubuntu for a couple of years now..Running it off the cd and not installing it..Well Vista crashed on my lap top and i was going to have to learn new OS anyway probable windows 7 so i installed Ubuntu and it has worked great and cost me nothing.. It takes a little while to get use to it just like any new version of windows but it is faster and you don't have to spend so much time trying to prevent spy ware and viruses from being installed on your computer.. Well worth the effort to learn it and i will never go back to Windows..

I started using UBUNTU about 4 years back. Its fabulous to use, but i found hard times getting its application softwares and still face issues while installing them. Its desktop animation features are great. Lightening fast speed on internet, great virus protection (as compared to damm gate's WINDOWS), network stability, etc are its wonderful features... hmmm... Lots of thing are there to share, but don've time enough to do. Meanwhile, THANKKSGIVING to "Team UBUNTU". GREAT JOB GUYS...

I started my journey of computing from DOS and then on Windows from 1995. In 2002 I wrote my first C program. The last programming script I wrote in 2007 on .Net
And after that I joined a firm whose policy was to join Ubuntu or Mac (only for rare cases). Here I experienced on a dual head display with productivity and stability.
Gradually I stared to promote Ubuntu and provide assistance to newbies. An Urdu literary boy, Khalid Nazir is an example who became a fan of Ubuntu with no backup as Windows.

Well, I had been using linux for long. But didn't think of using solely linux as my PC's OS until I used Ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu at work and at all of my PC and laptops. I work on LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) technology and for that Linux is ideal platform of choice.

I've been using Ubuntu for 5 years now and exclusively for 2...and it's been great! It's always a pleasure to start the year with a fresh distro full of software that most P.C.-goers would have to mortgage their houses to Microsoft just to afford. The ease and speed of the keyboard and terminal-based comands (and even the GUI's) provide for an unmatched experience of speed and versatility. I'm hooked and could never go back to using something that didn't let its user (and owner) hack it apart.

I used Windows going back to 3.1. I was never really happy with Windows, I was never really proud of my computer. Sure it had a lot of power but it was what is was. I got to point that I got pissed off within seconds of booting Windows. I started to search for an alterative. I ran the live CD's and settled on Ubuntu. Now I kick myself for putting up with Windows all those years not to mention what all those upgrades cost me. It didn't take log to get to the point of getting rid of Windows completely. I just love my system now and I make better everyday.

I switched over to Ubuntu many times. Counting I switched over four times. I got tired of Windows. Switch when Windows 7 came out. There was no spark any more. Everyone or Mostly everyone had Windows and it was boring I basically had no more fun. With Ubuntu, I get open source and many programs. Installing was so easy. Just installing is good for a new experience users. Windows is my secondary Dual boot while Ubuntu is my primary. I'm OK of not having the programs I used in Windows, I just find ways or other programs that does that same. Switch over to Ubuntu and go Open Source :3

I am a noob to ubuntu and for several months I have been trying
different distros . The main problem has been drivers for my wireless laptop.
I now have 10.04 on a dual boot with windows 7. I can get the drivers using the
live cd, but when I install on top of windows I cant download the driver! I am not
giving up. I am tired of being a hostage to Redmond.

Linux (and Ubuntu in particular) is great because:
-It's customizable.
From the highest level of changing wallpapers to the lowest level of modifying the very kernel, everything in Linux is open to my hand. While I rarely take advantage of the low level stuff, it excites me that there's a whole world ready for me to explore. There's still unconquered territory.
-It's easy.
I have been using Linux for four years, and yet it took me a short afternoon to learn how to use its desktop. Mind you, this was back when it was still a pain.
I have taught my mother Ubuntu on my laptop to access her e-Mail in a pair of sentences. I taught my non-tech neighbour how to configure and work Ubuntu on a more fine-grained level in an afternoon (covering basic topics like package management). I helped a fellow Computer Science student migrate to Ubuntu Linux entirely in about a week of answering questions - excited, open, wide eyed questions that had the same eager interest that I had when I first booted up my Linux LiveCD.
Linux can be used by all sorts of people. Don't give a second glance to people who say Linux is "too hard" for the "common user" (a strawman if I ever saw one, by the way). Anyone can learn to use Ubuntu, on the surface or deep within - whatever suits them, once their mind is open.
-It works now.
I first used Ubuntu at release 7.04. It was fun to play with. However, Wi-fi didn't work. My graphics card didn't work. One of my monitors was never detected properly. So I spent my time exploring, but never seriously considering my migration.
And then, over the years, something happened.
Linux started working.
Ubuntu 8.04 brought graphics card drivers that worked. 8.10 brought Wi-Fi for nearly every one of my computers and cards. 9.04 brought a monitor detection that worked out of the box.
The evolution was astounding, and at times I can barely believe the amazing distance Linux has crossed in such a short time. Three years. A step that has brought a change in the way the tech industry works, inventing a new category of computers (the netbook and nettop) and creating competition so fierce that even Apple has been forced to copy ideas from desktop Linux.
-It's home.
I've heard so many fanboys from every world of the computer lands tell me that my desktop of choice, Gnome, is not a good one, or that Linux is not ready for the desktop.
The Windows and Apple fanboys rant about how it's simply not there yet. The Apple fanboys in particular are quite vocal about how ugly it looks, and how "difficult" it is to use.
But none of that matters when I turn on my laptop and my Ubuntu desktop, with Gnome, greets me at the door.
None of that matters when Ubuntu boots in five seconds to show me Firefox's latest updates in Google Reader, or play some music in Rhythmbox with such ease that I cannot believe that anything is easier.
The greatest complement for a desktop is to call it an enabler. To enable me to experience my content, websites and create new words and code is simply enough. The mere fact that Gnome is able to look great doing it, well, that's just a perk.
You say Linux isn't here yet? That's like calling my house a dump. You can stomp your feet and complain about it all you want.
It's still my home. No stomping will ever change that!

I started to use Ubuntu from last crash of Windows Vista 10 months ago. Ubuntu can do all the Windows does and many others that Windows doesn't. With Ubuntu, I use my laptop, not maintain my laptop. I never need to clean my disk, defrag, update the antivirus software, and reboot endlessly after update. Now, every time others ask me to help them reinstall Windows, I recommend them Ubuntu.
As a student studying computer sci & tech, Ubuntu provides me everything I need - the development tools, lots of free documents, the stable OS and many other programs with source code.

Well all in this life is so expensive at the moment we are talking. So I have switched to ubuntu several years ago since I'm a web developer I always try to reduced my costs to the minimum amount of money to spend. As you could see in all of my projects recently and old I always use several FOS projects for many websites of mine just like Joomla, Drupal and many others! So why don't you take your chances and reduce your costs just like I did several years now.
That's life anyhow...

I got absolutely bored of Windows. I've been hearing about Ubuntu all over the Internet and I decided to try it. I downloaded Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) and gave it a go. When I realized I could "install" Ubuntu on a Windows system through wubi, I was pretty impressed. I did a wubi install and gave it a go. I was blown away, to say the least. Except for a good number of popular games, Ubuntu could do everything Windows could do, but much faster and with more elegance. I loved the package management system, I loved the interface, I loved everything about it.
I've never touched Windows until Seven came out, but I still mostly use Ubuntu. I currently have a dual-boot of Windows 7 and Lucid Lynx (10.04) and I only use Windows for games. I use Ubuntu for everything else.
Windows did a great job with Seven, but Ubuntu's come a long way. I like what Ubuntu stands for and I quote Adam (above) in this regard:
"Then there are a lot of support online and if I meet any problems with my system, either I wait for the updates to release the latest patches which always comes timely, or I fix the bugs myself by looking through the forums and search for the answers. In fact I think this should be the way computing experience should be, to take control over our machines and take responsibility for it, rather than to expect certain companies to take the blame for whatever security loopholes that might be discovered."
