I had just bought a laptop and was experimenting with vista. I had always heard about linux operating systems and even tried the live cd for knoppix but wasnt sure of what to do with it. I wanted to create a partition on the vista hard drive and wasnt able to even with the partition software that came on vista. I heard about gparted, heard it was a linux program, tried it, and it worked! I then installed ubuntu, loved the colors and the speed. I accidentally deleted the vista partition and had problems putting it back on. I then decided to put the ubuntu on full, no windows, and I have not looked back since.
Microsoft gives you windows, linux give you the entire world!!!!!!!!

I'm a perfectionist. I got a laptop with Windows XP which, thought great at first, started to run slowly. When the Windows Based Installer was released, I tried Ubuntu and was amazed how much Windows was holding me back. I eventually graduated to a full dual boot with Ubuntu after XP started bluescreening, and then to a single boot Ubuntu. I have been amazed by the stability and flexibility Linux has given me.
I have since graduated to a brand new, much more powerful laptop and the first thing I did was resize the Vista partition to as small as it would allow me and create a fresh Ubuntu installation. Ubuntu has always worked for me and is now my primary OS, with Vista standing by for that (yet to happen) time when I cannot run a program in Crossover Office or find a Linux alternative. Ubuntu has unleashed my creativity and helped me learn about the essence of computers, as well as truly come to appreciate what I've been missing.

Well, I first caught a glimpse of ubuntu on-line while it was still at it starting stages but never thought much of it until I saw its login screen on one computer at he university computer room that had Intrepid Ibex installed on it.I instantly fell in love with the whole appearance and guess what,I realized that I hadn't seen the last of it when I logged in to be greeted with a simple gnome desktop effects 'fused' with compiz.you might call it love at first sight,I don't mind that,one thing I know is that this one last for ever.I love Ubuntu and everything about it.I had windows vista home premium as the not only as sole OS on my system but also as the best OS I had ever run,Thanks to ubuntu,I'm now having a dual boot of it and ubuntu 8.10 plus my passion for windows is rapidly fading away.The closest and the dearest can bear witness,I rarely switch to windows except to confirm that its system files are still upbeat.Ubuntu,and Im sure all Linux based OS provide a nice environment for programming.I wish everyone would realize the beauty in openSource OS.With freedom come elegance.Linux for human beings.Big ups to Linus Torvald

I have always worked with computers even with my business. Who could have imagined that one would need computers for building guitars and violins but they are very handy. I draw my designs on paper and then perfect them using the GIMP and free CAT programs which are easily available and quick to install. Thanks to the ubuntu community. I have co installed Ubuntu in my personal computer along with windows, but I use this great Linux 90% of the time. I don't have to worry about putting it on other computers and be in trouble with the law. I am always recommending this great OS with friends, family, and partners in this interesting music community.

I tried to dual boot last year using ubuntu 7.1 with windows xp and screwed up the system because i didn't know how to do so, so I decided to wipe out my windows and just give linux a try. At first sight I wasn't comfortable with using linux because some of the hardwares are working less than optimal. I was crying for my xp back but then I had decided to stick to it and see what comes may, because I lost the installation cd.
As it turns out, linux wasn't that difficult to use after all. A simple apt-get command allows me to download the software and install it for me automatically without having me to go online, download the package and going through a series of installation steps as I would have done had I been using windows. Then there are a lot of support online and if I meet any problems with my system, either I wait for the updates to release the latest patches which always comes timely, or I fix the bugs myself by looking through the forums and search for the answers. In fact I think this should be the way computing experience should be, to take control over our machines and take responsibility for it, rather than to expect certain companies to take the blame for whatever security loopholes that might be discovered.
Though linux works on the hardware less than optimal, the fact that it is free, it works, and it is more secure than windows should give linux its full credit for being the best OS that can be found. Right now I have been running linux on my laptop for a year without a glitch and I am seeing how long this laptop can last till it expires. Keep up the good work linux!

Conocà Ubuntu gracias a mi mejor amigo. Él me llevó un cd de Warty Warthog 4.10 y lo instalé en una partición junto con Windows. En esos dÃas yo no tenÃa ni idea de lo que hacÃa, menos aún de lo que era en software libre, GNU/LINUX o cosas por el estilo. Luego de dos o tres dÃas intentando entender como era que funcionaba la "cosa esa" me decidà a eliminarlo de mi sistema. Convencido que habÃa tomado la mejor opción dejé de lado la idea de instalarlo de nuevo. Pasado el tiempo, como unos seis meses, compre un Laptop Hp y mi amigo insistió en montarle una distribución diferente. El sugirió Arch y lo instaló. Las cosas no podrÃan ir mejor, todo lo dejó funcionando. todo era más rápido, eficiente y estable que com Windows. Pero aún asà lo desinstalé a los pocos meses, ya que querÃa aprender a hacer las cosas yo mismo.
Mi primera instalación fue de Edgy y luego me pasé a Feisty. Aprendà a hacer las cosas por mi mismo y gracias a la iniciativa de mi amigo hoy por hoy no cambiarÃa mi sistema por nada, y aunque he probado otros (sabayon, debian, mint, fedora, suse) no he podido encontrar un sistema más estable, comodo y robusto que el de ubuntu (siempre con gnome). Con el tiempo empecé a hacer lo mismo que mi amigo, es decir mostrar GNU/LINUX a cuanto quisiera saber de él.

منذ 6 أسابيع تقريبا كان نضام لينوكس بالنسبة لي هو عبارة عن live cd أستعمله Ùقط ÙÙŠ الØالات القصوى كإسترجاع بعض البيانات قبل الÙرمتة أو عندما تواجهني مشكلة ما أما اليوم Ùقد Ø£ØµØ¨Ø Ù†Ø¸Ø§Ù…ÙŠ الرسمي الذي أستعمله Ùˆ Ø£ØµØ¨Ø Ø§Ù„ÙˆÙ†Ø¯ÙˆØ² النظام الثانوي الذي أعود إليه ÙÙŠ الØالات القصوى أو من أجل المشاريع الدراسية
و إليكم القصة منذ بدايتها إلى اليوم :
ÙÙŠ البداية Ùˆ جدت ÙÙŠ Ø¥Øدى المنتديات موضوعا عن موقع يرسل لك نسخة لينوكس مجانية إلى باب البيت Ùسجلت Ùيه مثل العديد من المواقع التي اسجل Ùيها Ùˆ أهجرها سابقا Ùˆ لكنّي تÙاجئت بعد أسبوعين بظر٠غريب أمام باب المنزل Ùˆ Ùيه نسخة ubuntu 7.10 Ùبدأت بإستعمال النسخة من السيدي دون تنصيبها Ùˆ قد وجدتها مختلÙØ© تماما على الوندوز الذي (Ø¥ØترÙته) Ùˆ أجدت إستعماله Ùˆ عندها عدت مجددا للوندوز.
بعد العودة للدراسة هذه السنة طلب منّا أن نقوم بإنشاء قاعدة بيانات بالأوراكل (أنا أدرس الإعلامية المطبقة ÙÙŠ التصرÙ) ،و لأنه من الصعب Øذ٠الأوراكل بعد تنصيبه عى الوندوز، قرّرت تثبيت نسخة الـubuntu التي لدي Ùˆ تنصيب الأوراكل 10g عليها Ùˆ لكني Ùوجأت بتعقّد الأمور ÙÙŠ البداية Ùلم أكن أعر٠ما هو دور الـswap Ùˆ لا ماهو ال root (Øتى أني نزّلت نسخة أوراكل (rpm) لأنصبها على اليوبونتو) Ùقضيت 3 أيّام Ùˆ أنا أبØØ« عن طريقة تنصيب هذه النسخة (Ùˆ قد نجØت ÙÙŠ ذلك Ùˆ الØمد لله ) خلال هذه الÙترة الوجيزة تعلّمت الكثير عن هذا النظام الذي عجبت كثيرا لتطوّره Ùˆ دعمه للتعاري٠العتاد Ùˆ البرامج المرÙقة معه إلخ.. ما جعلني أستغني نسبيا على الوندوز Ùˆ أراØني من مشاكله التي لا تنتهي كالÙيروسات Ùˆ مشاكل الÙلاش ديسك Ùˆ الكثير من المشاكل التي يعانيها أصØاب الوندوز Ùˆ أنتم أدرى بها
Øاليا أنا أنصب الـubuntu بجانب الويندوز xp Ùˆ للأس٠لايمكنني التخلّي بشكل تام عن الوندوز بسبب دراستي Ùˆ Øاجتي لبعض البرامج الخاصة به كالÙيجول ستيديو. Ùˆ أنا أشد على يد كل من يريد دخول هذا العالم الرائع Ùˆ أدعو الجميع للتجربة

Ging einige Jahre "gut". 2007 lange Bettlägerigkeit wegen Knochenbruch; Internet auswendig gelernt, weil Bücherlesen geht nicht in Vollzeit. Dabei Linux gefunden. Einige Distros angesehen. Ubuntu war die sympathischste (Auftritt, Grundgedanke, community). Parallelinstallation mit XP ging (weiss nicht mehr warum) irgendwie nicht. Konsequenz: Vollinstallation. Lief sofort perfekt.Neuer Provider aus der TV-Steckdose(dsl-Tempo). Aha, fühle mich zuhause!
Investition in Zusätzliche Hardware: Laptop(nur Dank toller community mit hardy unterwegs, inzwischen völlig problemlos mit intrepid), Netbook, stromsparender mini-Desktop und, ach ja, billiger Alt-PC, auf dem unverzichtbare (und nicht wine-fähige) win-Dinger laufen.....(nee, nie im net damit).Bin begeistert und immer noch experimentierfreudig. An uns Alle: go on ubuntu!!!

I've been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and I must say that I have never needed to roll back to Windows to do University papers, presentations and/or videos and web sites. Ubuntu has made my life a lot easier and more efficient, and I love the idea of sharing with people around the world to make this the best operating system ever.

I come from a windows background, and have been developing PHP applications in a windows environment (for Linux servers). I was always hesitant about trying out a Linux desktop, mainly because of the stereotypes of Linux, in that it was an OS for the power user, the uber geek, and I feared I would be wasting my time. Then I was introduced to Ubuntu, and all my previous perceptions about Linux were changed entirely. I fell in love! My development skills improved greatly, I started to ENJOY developing, and Ubuntu has made me PROUD of the work I produce. Also, setting up a server environment for my development is now a breeze :) I love the community support, I love the package manager, I love the command line tools, I love that I'm a Linux user, and I love Ubuntu for making all this happen for me.

I got fed up with Microsoft with all it's problems. To top it all Microsoft kept telling me that my perfectly legal XP and later with a new computer, my vista (both had come pre-installed with PCs when I bought the PCs) are not legal. So I dumped Microsoft, and tried all different flavors of Linux, finally settling on Ubuntu. My PC has Ubuntu 8.10 and my laptop has gOS a derivative of Ubuntu with Google gadgets pre-installed. I have even managed to install all the server software and networked the PC with the laptop. I also have virtual box installed.

Aun recuerdo al gracioso pingüino que tantas veces puse en mi messenger sin saber quien era, y también cuanto trabajo me costó al principio saber como poner las diérecis jeje.
Como un buen estudiante de ingenierÃa, ingrese a la universidad con una inociencia propia de MS-DOS, creyendo que programarÃa todo en un .bat. Es un hecho que habÃa oido hablar de Unix y de Linus Trovalds, pero el marketing mundial, realiza un excelente trabajo y me tenian muy ocupado editando un documento de Word. Asi, los profesores de programación, nos sugerian el uso de Linux, Latex, efectos de Compiz bla, bla, bla... sugerencias a las que omiti soberviamente, por que aun creia que Windows era un universo mágico que resolverÃa mi vida con .exe's, antivirus y "servispacks".
Mi gran salto ocurrió hace apenas una semana. Todo el semestre, compilé mis programitas sobre Windows, los entregaba sin ningun problema, por que eran tan sencillos que compilaban también, en los "Mandriva" de la escuela. Jamás supuse que el proyecto final tendrÃa que correr sobre Linux... y ahora que hago ?
El hecho de programar nuevas aplicaciones en un sistema operativo que no conocia me daba terror, aunado a la dependencia mental y psicológica que me retenia en una burbuja (c)Microsoft. Bueno, resignado y con toda la mente horrorizada por los prometedores mitos urbanos de que si era nuevo en Linux, era de ley que destruyera mi disco duro por lo menos una vez, descargue el LiveCD de Ubuntu con mas miedo que ganas. Ubuntu, al menos eso habÃa oido decir a algunos compañeros cuando hablaban de Linux.
Asi, una vez descargado, quemé el iso a un CD y lo meti a mi PC. Pero los bajos recursos de mi sistema no alcanzaban muy bien... mmmm, y ahora ? Bueno, siempre esta Sn. Google. Asi que buscando, se me aliaron un excelente blog y un "Alternate CD". Configuré el BIOS, inicio desde el CD-ROM, y apareció la pantalla negra con opciones que el blog prometió que aparecerÃa. Seguà las instrucciones, enter, enter... y se hizo la luz.
Pise por primera vez este maravilloso mundo como alguien que intenta pasar por un puente de estacas en un cañon... puedo escuchar música? Vaya! si puedo. puedo ver una pelicula? tambien puedo! Veamos, compilare holaubuntu.c... rayos ! marcó un error, como instalo el compilador? mmm, le preguntaré a un amigo... pero en donde? A ver, tranquilo, veamos... Aplicaciones/Internet/... Cliente de Mensajeria ! Esto tiene todo ! Hasta Firefox !, entremos a internet... wow, wordpress, google, la pagina de ubuntu, y todo corre más rápido, esto es increible... un momento... NO INSTALE EL ANTIVIRUS !!!!!! NOOO !!!!
... jejeje aun me da pena esa parte, pero en verdad que el cambio se siente. Es todo muy agradable, la comunidad, el solo sentir parte de la filosofÃa que manejan estas distribuciones de Linux, y bueno, ya que por fin he terminado mi proyecto, me he metido a profundizar más en esto de Ubuntu y Linux, y con lo poco que he visto, y experimentado, he quedado maravillado.
Ojala ubiera instalado Ubuntu antes, no me queda ninguna duda.

لكن بØلول سنة 2003 تغيرة Øياتي مع توزيعة المندريÙا التي جربتها أول مرة ÙÙŠ Ù†Ùس السنة 2003
أعجبتني لأنها كانت تعتمد على قاعدة عمل مثل الدوس (أي الترمنل ÙÙŠ اللينكس )Ùˆ كانت الأوامر مباشرة Ùˆ Ùعالة
ÙÙŠ سنة 2007 بدأت قصتي مع الأبنتو Ùˆ الذي ثبت ÙÙŠ إستخدامه Øتى الأن.... Ùˆ الله اللينكس روعة Øقيقية

I started working in an office where, like most other offices out there, was all Windows based. I had used Linux in college and like Chris above, had a little Linux experience. I decided to take an old redundant server out of storage and load Ubuntu server onto it. Since I have installed it the other I.T. admins (that had no Linux experience) have seen the benefits of it. Unlike that Windows Server the Ubuntu server has never needed a reboot (that's an uptime of over 2 years folks!) and I use it as a file server, a web server and also store all the company images on it. Installing and using Ubuntu was so easy and contains so many features that I dumped my desktop distro of Vista and installed Ubuntu onto it too. I can honestly say that it is without doubt the best move that I have made. Anyone that come into my office are astounded by the "Rotating desktop" feature plus I've a Win XP distro running on a Virtual machine for the custom applications in the company. Try Ubuntu, you won't be disappointed

بعد اØتلال العراق تعرÙت على الØاسوب وبدات مع نظام وندوز لكن هذا النظام جدا متعب Ùقد مللت من الضغط على Ù…ÙØ§ØªÙŠØ ÙƒÙˆÙ†ØªØ±ÙˆÙ„ وارت ودليت وكذلك من الÙورمات والÙايروسات بالØقيقة لا يمر اسبوع الا واÙرمت الØاسوب وهذه كلها مشقات انا بغنى عنها
ووجدت اخيرا بابونتور الخير الكثير Ùهو نظان ثابت ومستقر ومÙØªÙˆØ Ø§Ù„Ù…ØµØ¯Ø± اتمنى ان يرتقي اكثر واكثر

تصور انك ÙÙŠ نظام الوندوز وتقوم بتØميل نظام ابونتو...ويتم تركيبه كبقية برامج الوندوز ودون ان يؤثر على عمل الوزندوز...وكذلك يمنكنك ان تشغل ابونتو دون ان تØتاج الى هارد ديسك مستقل..كل ماعليك هو ان تضع القرص الخاص بالنظام وتبدأ بعد دقائق معدودة بالولوج ÙÙŠ عملك ..
انا اعتقد ان مستقبل البرمجيات سو٠يكون للانظمة المجانية والمÙتوØØ©..
